Video: Patrick Stewart Talks About Domestic Violence

02.10.12

Patrick Stewart is one of my favorite actors. I was so pleased to learn recently that he considers himself a feminist. In this video he speaks out about violence against women. He also shares his own personal experience with domestic violence and ephasizes the psychological effects in can have on the entire family.

Video: A Victim of Human Trafficking Tells Her Story

01.30.12

A courageous woman shares her story about becoming a victim of human trafficking as a young teenager. What an amazing woman! This is the kind of strength that changes the world.

Sexual slavery is real. Please help fight it by donating to the Somaly Mam Foundation. Even small donations make a difference. Click here to donate.

Survivor-Made Jewelry Available At The Somaly Mam Empowerment Store

01.26.12

Click To Visit The Somaly Mam Empowerment Store One of the funnest ways to donate to the Somaly Mam Foundation is by purchasing jewelry made by survivors at the Somaly Mam Empowerment Store. Somaly Mam has rescued these girls from brothels and taught them skills to help them become independent and provide for themselves. I think it's fantastic that Somaly Mam offers these beautiful bracelets online at the Empowerment Store. When you buy a survivor-made necklace or bracelet, your money goes directly to the Somaly Mam Foundation.

In Cambodia, many families are extremely poor so they sell their female children to brothels to support the family. It's a barbaric tradition and Somaly Mam is working hard to teach the young girls in her shelter healthy ways to earn money to support themselves and their families someday. What better way to support a survivor than by giving her money for something beautiful she created with her own hands! When you buy one of these beautiful necklaces or bracelets you're not only donating to a very important cause, you're also giving a young girl confidence in her own talents and skills.

I have made a New Years resolution to start donating $50 a month to the Somaly Mam Foundation. Next month, instead of donating through my Online Fundraiser, I plan to spend that money on jewelry at the Somaly Mam Empowerment Store. I can't wait to get my own beautiful silk necklace. I'll wear it with pride!

In these video clips Somaly talks about how she was sold to a brothel at very young age, how she finally escaped and what she does now to help other victims like herself.
